Exodus 21:1-23:9

Things to keep in mind as you read this collection of laws:

1. Read these laws in the context of the Ten Commandments. “The two belong together in time and interpretation.”
2. These are civil laws dealing with people and possessions. They were dealt with in a court and carried consequences.
3. These laws were given about 3500 years ago; our culture and economy are very different today. There is a distance in our understanding as we read them.
4. God is omniscient, loving, and good in giving these laws to Israel! Confess your ignorance while trusting God who gave them.
5. God punishes sin.
