Joshua Overview, Part 2
I. The Promise and the Warning (Hebrews 4:3-5)
A. The Reality of Rest: Those who have believed enter God’s rest, a promise that has existed since the foundation of the world.
B. The Warning of Disobedience: God swore in His wrath that the faithless generation (“they”) would not enter His rest.
C. The Example of Creation: God rested on the seventh day from all His works, establishing a pattern.
II. The Limitation of Old Testament Rest (Hebrews 4:6-8)
A. The Failures of the Past: Those who formerly had the good news preached to them failed to enter due to disobedience.
B. The “Today” Factor: God fixes a new “today” through David, long after the Israelites entered Canaan, indicating the promise was not fully realized.
C. The Inadequacy of Joshua: If Joshua had given them final, complete rest, God would not have spoken of “another day” later on.
D. The Missed Point: The land of Canaan was not the ultimate rest; the people missed the true meaning.
III. The Remaining Sabbath Rest (Hebrews 4:9-10)
A. The Permanent Provision: There remains a Sabbath rest (Sabbath keeping) for the people of God.
B. Resting from Works: Whoever enters God’s rest also rests from their own works, just as God did from His.
IV. Conclusion: Jesus as the Final Rest
A. The Ultimate Rest: Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of that rest.
B. Faith as the Key: Entering this rest is achieved through faith in Him.
C. Application: Lessons from the Book of Joshua regarding disobedience and the need for a greater rest.
