Unity Through Diverse Gifts, Part 1

Paul urges the church to pursue unity, but in Ephesians 4:7-12, he shifts focus to emphasize the importance of diversity. It is the differences in the gifts that God bestows that make the church strong. The church matures when diverse gifts operate together in unity.

Christ Gives Gifts (verse 7)

Jesus distributes diverse gifts among us. There is a significant contrast between verses 6 and 7. In verse 6, we see the unity of believers, but in verse 7, Paul highlights the diversity of gifts with the word “but.” Unity does not mean uniformity. Each person has a gift that may differ from the person beside them. Even those with the same gift might express it in varying degrees, measures, or ways.

Christ Has the Right to Give Diverse Gifts (verses 8–10a)

The diverse gifts are not the result of works or personal merit. It’s not about us. As verse 1 reminds us, we need grace to walk in a manner worthy of our calling. Grace enables those who have been saved to live in alignment with that calling. A diverse range of gifts in the church is essential for this walk. Furthermore, it’s impossible to fully walk in a worthy manner without being an active member of a local church body.

Christ’s Purpose in Diverse Gifts (verse 10b)

In verse 10, Jesus gives gifts “to fill all things.” Have you identified your spiritual gift(s)? Do you actively seek to understand and use it? How have you supported others in discovering their gifts? Often, we view gifts individually, but we must consider the broader picture of Christ’s work in His body, the church. Christ is accomplishing something unique in His church today—something that isn’t happening anywhere else.

Example of the Distribution of Diverse Gifts (verses 11–12)

Paul provides a list of different gifts, which should not be confused with church titles or offices. These gifts are foundational, but no one gift is more important than another:

  • Apostle: Apostles established churches. This includes individuals gifted in this area, such as Barnabas, as well as those who held the position of apostle.
  • Prophet: Prophecy, as a gift of revelation, edification, and encouragement with authority, is no longer in effect today.
  • Evangelist: These individuals are uniquely gifted to lead others to Christ and proclaim the gospel.
  • Pastor-Teacher: Is this one gift or two? Since we are discussing gifting, there are pastors and there are teachers. All pastors should be able to teach, while some teachers are gifted to pastor (shepherd) groups as well.

Application Points

  • Jesus lived a perfect life and is victorious in His ascension. As Lord, He has the right to give gifts to whomever He chooses! Not all believers have the same spiritual gifts, nor do we all receive the same measure of gifting. Recognize the unique role God has given you and strive to use it for His purposes.
