Principles from the Account of Gideon

The story of Gideon in Judges 6-8 has one noticeable difference from the cycle we notice throughout the book of Judges. In Judges 6:7-10, God sends a prophet to rebuke Israel.

Gideon has 3 “if” questions for God. He wants signs and evidence that God will do what He says.

There are several principles we can learn from Gideon’s story that are repeated in the New Testament.

  1. God does not let rebellion go without discipline (Galatians 6:7-8, Hebrews 12:4-10).
  2. God determines the instrument and duration of the discipline.
  3. Discipline has a purpose: repentance from sin and for us to share in God’s holiness.
  4. God wants us to know where we have sinned. Once we are aware, we can deal with it in love and forgiveness.
